Would you like to try something new?  Do you feel your job is too stressful and you would like to switch to another job?  Has your job become too routine and one dimensional?

If any of the above is true, then you may have thought of making a career switch and trying something more enjoyable or flexible.  However, you can’t just jump into the next job without putting certain things into consideration.

Before you make a career switch, here are some important things to consider:

 

DO I REALLY WANT TO SWITCH? WHAT IS MAKING ME SWITCH?

Most times, it is not necessary to switch jobs or careers to get out of the drudgery of work.  Find ways to make your current job enjoyable.  You should only begin the career switching process.  When you are absolutely certain that’s what you want to do.

 

WHAT DO I WANT TO DO?

This is an important question to ask yourself so you do not jump into another boring job.  Choose something you will be happy doing.  Try to aim for a job that would help you get fulfillment.

 

WHAT ARE MY SKILLS?

In today’s world, you need to have skills that differentiate you from the crowd. Your skills would enable you get a new job/career.  Enumerate the skills you have and think of how to use them to get into a career that would make you feel more accomplished.

 

AM I UTILIZING MY NETWORK?

You should have contacts in your chosen career field.  In order to make a successful career switch, you should have a good network.  It can be tough adapting to new jobs and industries, so it is important that you would have started building relationships with insiders before making your career switch.  In essence, build and utilize your network.

 

AM I FINANCIALLY STABLE?

It is not advisable to make a career switch when you have financial problems.  There may be a lag between when you quit your current job and when you get the new job and you would need emergency funds to live on during this period.  Ensure that you have to cover about six months expenses before trying to change jobs.
