As a business leader, you must be able to motivate your employees in order to get the best out of them. Many leaders often think that money is the only way to motivate employees. Give them a raise! However, this does not work all the time because employees need some things other than money to inspire them to peak performance.
Here are some ideas for you to consider when deciding how to inspire your employees beyond money:
GIVE EMPLOYEES CREDIT
Many leaders take all the credit for success and only remember their employees when it is time to apportion blame. One way of inspiring employees is to give them credit for their performance. Allow your employees come up with ideas and give them credit when those ideas lead to success.
PRAISE YOUR EMPLOYEES
Most leaders and managers underestimate the importance of praise.
Praise appeals to the emotional part of the employee and can help increase his/her morale. Cash will be spent and that would be the end of it. Praise their efforts and improvements in front of their colleagues and that would build their self esteem with a positive effect on performance.
FRAME CRITICISMS AS DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
There may come a time when you would need to give negative feedback.
Don’t frame your feedback in a direct manner so you don’t demotivate the person involved. Rather, use an indirect approach and make the employee see the situation as an opportunity to improve.
BUILD TEAM SPIRIT
In an earlier article, we discussed team spirit and its positive effects on employees. So it is important for you to build team spirit.
Employees have been known to stay put even with a low salary because of a positive work environment. When people work in friendly teams, they are more motivated.
HIGHLIGHT YOUR EMPLOYEES STRENGHT
This goes hand in hand with praising your employees. Take the top performers of your team and showcase them as examples of the kind of performance you expect from your employees. This would motivate everyone to improve their performance.
